What is driving your life? When you speak are you being driven by the Spirit or by Hell? When you speak in the Spirit, you speak words of edification that build people up. When you speak under the influence of Hell, your words are destructive and demeaning. James tells us that we need a new heart in order to live a life that is pleasing to God. Repentance is an important step on the road to healing. This is more than discipline, it is a revelation of who I am.

James 3:2-12
WHAT IS DRIVING YOUR LIFE?
Well thought out values and plans or a tongue that is out of control?
Remember what James said earlier about the tongue:
James 1:19-20
Here is an interesting line:
James 3.6b
When the Spirit of God is on someone they speak and pray out of the spirit, led by the Spirit of God.
This speaking and praying is given to edify, to build up.
When your tongue is set on fire by hell you do the same thing. Only instead of being led by the Spirit of God you are being led by the spirit of the enemy.
Instead of edifying and building, you are ripping and tearing.
That is a tongue lit on fire by hell. It is needless, senseless and Godless.
James 1:20 and James 3:8a
So what, we are destined to blow up our relationships?
James 3:9-10
This is the whole point of James, Man needs a new heart.
James 3:2
There is a difference between accidental and reckless.
Remember the outcome can be the same: it is just that the reckless has a higher level of risk and responsibility.
The same is true with the tongue. When my heart is changed, I may not be perfect but I am not reckless.
What do I do?
-
Learn and obey the rules of the road.
-
Identify areas of weakness. Listen to the Spirit and others.
-
Submit my conversation to God.
-
Repent, when you fail, to the person.
-
Kill the source.
James 3:11-12
What flows out of our mouth is a reflection of what is in us.
What is in you is what is going to come out of your mouth.
Your mouth is telling you something about your relationship with God.
Gossip, slander, cursing, attacking, as well as hopeless, complaining, fear and doubt say one thing. While praise, thankfulness, encouragement, hope, love, joy and faith say another.
This is more than a discipline it is a revelation of who I am.
