James 1:26
I. Religion - Religious acts were the way to God.
We should still be religious today, dedicated to biblical practices that, when done sincerely, open our heart to God.
The truth James points out is relevant to us today.
II. Self-destruction - James points out results of an out of control tongue.
James 1:26
A. This man deceives himself.
Matthew 12:33-37
Jesus says what comes out of our mouths reveals the kind of heart we have.
James says, “To think yourself right with God when your mouth is dangerous is self-deception.”
How sad to live your life religiously for years and stand before God only to discover you were self-deceived.
B. This man’s religion is worthless.
All religious acts are worthless if your tongue is not on a rein.
James is teaching that in all places of life, religious acts that should point people to God are destroyed by an out of control tongue.
III. The Rein - When the heart is right the words are brought into righteous control.
To control my tongue is twofold.
1. The rein keeps me from going where I should not go.
Assignment for the serious:
At the end of each day, stop and pray, “Lord, did I say anything hurtful today”?
2. The rein also directs me to where I should go.
Not only can words said be hurtful, words left unsaid can be hurtful.
Assignment for the serious:
At the beginning of each day stop and pray, “Lord, is there anyone I need to encourage today?”
Your words or lack of words say your heart is not filled with the love of God!
Some here today are walking wounded from words said and words left unsaid.
God loves you and made you with a purpose.
